Welcome to the Plant Soil and Peat Page
When you plant soil choice is critical.
If you want to grow plants in containers indoors or outdoors, your normal garden soil should not be used if you want to have good results.
Normal garden soil generally contains weed seeds and disease organisms, and does not allow good drainage.
If you want to use your garden soil, you should mix it with other things. Here is a good recipe:
- 1 part garden soil
- 1 part peat or peat-based soil
- 1 part sand or gravel
The sand or gravel should be placed in the bottom of the container.
Then the normal garden soil and peat should be mixed together and placed on top of the sand or gravel.
The peat in the soil and the sand or gravel will help improve drainage.
Commercial soil combinations, which you should use without adding in your normal garden soil, are even better for plants.
Many commercial soils avaiable on the market are composed of peat soil, sand granules, vermiculite, and nutrients.
These soils have many advantages compared with the ground soil. They are clean, light, have excellent drainage, and are easy to obtain.
However, some commercial soil mixtures contain no nutrients, so you may need to fertilize the plants regularly to keep them alive and looking good.
